“Oblivia” by Debbie Boucher, is a story that sneaks up on you and captures your attention. The author tells the story from two perspectives, Dan Mora and Jamie Morgan, both Peace Corps Volunteers in Bolivia. The two story lines are shared at different times, in different years, which caused me some confusion early in the book, but I really enjoyed it once I was used to going back and forth.
Dan Mora is missing and Jamie Morgan is trying to find him. She is not sure who she can trust, which makes finding him more challenging. Since the story starts with Dan missing, the author brings the reader up to date on the relationship of Dan and Jamie by writing from Dan’s perspective a couple years prior to the present time. The romantic tension between the two draws the reader in, and I found myself cheering for the couple.
Another interesting aspect of this book is the actual work of the Peace Corps Volunteers. Jamie is an engineer and the details about her work and the politics and culture of Bolivia were fascinating. It was enlightening to get a close-up view of a third world country and the challenges and struggles that the people face. I learned facts that I would never have otherwise learned.
I highly recommend “Oblivia” by Debbie Boucher to anyone who likes a good mystery with a bit of romance. The characters are real and likeable and I felt connected to them. I particularly liked how the intelligence of the author was evident in her writing. This isn’t a ‘fluffy’ romantic mystery, but a book full of facts and history that can be life changing for the reader. I hope to read more mysteries by Ms. Boucher in the future.
